SRO PROGRAM
The School Resource Officer (SRO) program began in the City of Cayce in 1999. There is a school resource officer assigned to each middle school campus in the city. Partial funding for the SRO positions has been obtained through grants offered by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
The SRO has responsibility for general law enforcement duties to include detection and investigation of criminal activities and protection of life and property. These officers also address a variety of social conflict issues through program solving techniques. They make suggestions to both students and faculty members on matters of crime prevention and physical security.
They serve as positive role models and as mentors for the student and may be involved with many school based programs that enhance the quality of life on campus.
The SRO arranges the security for extra curricular activities such as athletic events and on campus recreational activities. Many also serve as guest instructors in classes such as health education, civics and others.
SRO's are carefully selected for the position and receive special training for their duties, Administrators participate in the selection and evaluation of SRO's and usually consider them to be an indispensable part of the school facility.
The presence of the SRO on campus helps maintain order and security on a day-to-day basis, ensuring a safe campus environment that is conducive to learning. The SRO stands ready to respond to emergency situations such as natural disaster or dangerous intruders on campus.
The SRO is not an employee of the school district and is not directly involved with school discipline or the enforcement of school district policy. The SRO serves in a partnership role by helping to make the public school a safer and more secure place.
The SRO serves as a valuable resource for students, parents and school officials alike.
The Cayce Police Department is Constantly striving to enhance its relationship with the youth of our community by offering a summer camp.
