Outdoor Burning Guide

Think before you burn.

Careless debris burners cause more than 40% of wildfires in South Carolina every year.  Don’t be one of them.  You are responsible for your fire.

If it escapes, you may be fined.  If it damages another person’s property, you may be liable.

Always consider other options to burning.

The City provides free yard debris pickup for residents, please call sanitation at 803-796-9020.

In the City of Cayce , all open burning requires a City of Cayce Burning Permit .  You must get a new burning permit each year at the Cayce Fire Department.  After you have your permit for the year, you just simply need to call the Cayce Fire Dept. at 803-794-0456 to see if burning is permitted that day and notify them of your intent to burn.  Please follow the following rules when burning:

1)     All burning must be accomplished during daylight hours.

2)     No burning is permitted within 50’ of any structure (any house, carport, shed, etc.)

3)     A competent person must constantly attend the fire, and that person must have sufficient means to extinguish the fire (such as  a connected garden hose, extended near the fire).

4)     Public Safety personnel may require the attendee to extinguish the fire immediately if weather conditions change or if the smoke proves to be a nuisance to neighbors.

5)     Only yard debris may be burned (i.e. tree limbs, leaves, grass, straw).  Burning of tires, wire, household trash, treated lumber or any other material is strictly prohibited and may result in criminal prosecution.

Most of all, Be Safe and Be Courteous.  Pick days, times and weather conditions that reduce the chance of fire spread and reduce the amount of smoke held close to the ground.

If you reside in Lexington County but not within a municipality, call 1-800-705-8613 before burning.
