Chief
Charles E. McNair
Director
of The Cayce Department of Public Safety
Chief McNair was born on Oakland Avenue and was
raised in the Cayce area. In 1974, he joined the Cayce Fire Department,
and he was employed as an Animal Control Officer. Chief McNair later
transferred to the Cayce Police Department as a Communication's Officer
and in 1976 began his law enforcement career with the department.
In 1977, Chief McNair joined
the South Carolina Highway Patrol where he served for 17 years. In 1993,
he joined the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and was
assigned to the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), where he
supervised a Federal Task Force consisting of local, state and federal
drug agents. Chief McNair retired from SLED in June 2000, after
accepting the position of Director for the Cayce Department of Public
Safety.
During his service with the
South Carolina Highway Patrol, Chief McNair was the 1st State Trooper in
South Carolina to be assigned to full time drug interdiction. The
program expanded under Chief McNair and is presently known as the ACE
Team. Chief McNair has received many awards during his career in law
enforcement. He is responsible for the largest cocaine seizure ever at
the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. Chief McNair was instrumental in
breaking up the largest indoor marijuana growing operation in South
Carolina as well. When Chief McNair retired from SLED, Chief Robert
Stewart retired his badge and the Federal Drug Enforcement
Administration also retired his federal badge.
Chief McNair is married to
Cheryl Caudle McNair of Cayce. They have two daughters, one of which is
now with the Lord. He also has two granddaughters and one great
granddaughter.
