CRIME ALERT  March 2006

We have recently seen an increase in "advance fee" Scams or fake check scams in our area. The most common so far is also known as a lottery scam. The Victim receives a notice by E-mail or regular mail stating that they have won some type of  lottery (Generally an international one). They are advised that all they have to do is contact a representative at a certain number to claim their prize. Upon contacting the person one of two things happens:

1. The "representative" tries to talk the victim into turning over their account information for a direct deposit of their winnings. Once the information is obtained the scammer is never heard form again but the victim is usually subject to several fraudulent transactions on their account and possibly a full fledged case of identity theft.

2 The representative tells the victim that there is a processing fee (an "advance fee") which needs to be paid but can conveniently be paid out of the winnings. They send the victim a check that they are supposed to cash and send back to the rep to release their winnings. Once the check is cashed and the money is sent the scammer is never heard from again and the check eventually is returned to the victims bank as counterfeit leaving the victim to explain things to the bank.

If you receive any type of notification such as this and are suspicious DO NOT give out any information over your e-mail or on the phone as you could subject yourself to identity fraud.  You are encouraged instead to contact The Cayce Department of Public Safety Investigations division or your local police department if you live outside the city to see if the notification is legitimate.
